Cine de Barrio

Negros has contributed significantly to the development of alternative cinema in the Philippines and has become one of the fertile training grounds that produced a lot of filmmakers and films from the regions. It has become a venue for discourse and creative learning and one of its major components, in preparation for Bacollywood:Cinema Rehiyon 2012, is Cine de Barrio which will make the films accessible to the larger public through screenings in public viewing venues of key barangays in the city.

Cine de Barrio has already held screenings in Barangays 19, Villamonte, Estefania, Tangub, Alijis and at the 6th Negros Island Organic Farmers' Festival, and it features the following films produced in Negros by our local filmmakers through the years:

· PAGHIGUGMA SA KADASIGON SANG KASANAG (2010)

Directed by: Jo Macasa & Cindy Ballesteros

Synopsis: Except for her science class, Julie’s grades are close to failing. Every time her science teacher walks in the room and discusses a lesson, her eyes are all on him, eager to learn and excel in the subject. One day, she meets an alleged time traveler and he helps her find a way to go back decades earlier. Julie runs into her science teacher, now a young student at the university, and the two of them fall in-love. As their friendship grows strong, Julie has to make a decision whether to leave her family behind at present or stay with her paramour in the past.

· PANGANOD (2007)

Directed by: Paolo Lindaya

A series of ambiguous and seemingly unrelated images quietly and slowly flash across the screen. Then a man walks into a picturesque garden. Here, a small girl asks the man to stay. He says no and walks away. The same man walks into a hall of mirrors. Here, a beautiful woman tells him that he is in the wrong place and that he is being expected on the other side. Once again, he says no and walks away. We see the same images at the start of the film. But now we see how they come together. It is the site of a car accident. The man we saw earlier is near death. What flashes through a man’s mind when he is at death’s door? What does he remember? What does he think of? What does he dream of?

“Panganod” explores these themes in a quiet and lyrical fashion and in the process takes us on a poetic trip that leaves us in contemplation and wonder.

· ROGER (2011)

Directed by: Karl Samson, Jimbot Flores

Synopsis: Story of Butoy, a 13 year-old boy living in a slum with his parents who are both jobless. His father is a gambler and a drunkard. Butoy’s only “companion” is is BMX bicycle that he uses every day. Whenever his parents fight, the only person who consoles him is his grandfather, lolo Roger. One day Butoy loses his bike, and after several days of looking for it, he falls ill and gets hospitalized.

· IMPERFECT BLEND (2011)

Directed by: Julius Dela Peña

Synopsis: Story of Andre with his intimacy in a coffee shop in relation with his personal interests in life.

· MISSING CHAPTERS (2009)

Directed by: Michael Varca

Synopsis: Two friends lose an I-pod at a wild party. Both have no memory whatsoever as to what occured the night before. They try to patch up events by recalling the skimpy details of the eventful night.

· ANG PAO (2009)

Directed by: Lawrence Fajardo

Synopsis: A hired assassin prepares for his final job. Inside a restaurant, a typical mix of Filipino Chinese bystanders languidly kills time. Soon enough, the assassin finds himself right at the restaurant doorstep. He wastes no time. What transpires next is an exhilarating turn of events that proves once more that there is more than meets the eye.

· NOCHE BUENA (1997)

Directed by: Barney Molina

Synopsis: A story of family set in that one night when Filipinos anticipate the coming of Christmas day by partaking of a meal with all our loved ones gathered in the ancestral home –the noche Buena. Mama now alone in her house reminisces a time when the joy of Christmas filled her home, but the years have not been kind and she now finds herself alone with her memories. Will the spirit of Christmas this time once again visit and mend her broken home?

Cine de Barrio will this time feature regional films not only from Bacolod, but from Luzon, Visayas & Mindanao for Bacollywood: Cinema Rehiyon 2012 on February 8 (Luzon Films) - Brgy. 19, February 9 (Visayan Films) - Brgy. Villamonte, and February 10 (Mindanao Films) - Brgy. Pta. Taytay with a Video Art exhibition "Gilubong Ang Akong Pusod Sa Dagat" by Martha Atienza.

The National Commission for Culture & the Arts launched Cinema Rehiyon, one of its flagship
projects for the Philippine Arts Festival 2012 in the city -the host for this year's film and
video art festival. Dr. Mike Rapatan, Head of the NCCA National Committee on Cinema was
joined by Direk Peque Gallaga & Bacollywood: Cinema Rehiyon 2012 Festival Director Manny

BACOLLYWOOD is Newsworthy!

The spotlight turned onto BACOLLYWOOD this morning as reporters from GMA, ABS-CBN, BHTV and Visayan Daily star lined up for interviews with our Staff, Guests and Directors at our Opening Ceremonies at University of St. La Salle.

ABS- CBN came to catch the program and the film "Cano" filmed entirely in Bacolod City.

Director Remton Zualsola arrived this morning from Cebu and instantly gained a fan base with his film "To Siomai Love"

Director Gabby Fernandez who just arrived from Manila for this event talked to GMA after answering several questions from the audience who were all intrigued by his film "Mana" (which was so popular that there was a special request for an encore screening at Colegio San Agustin Bacolod!)

Abigail Lazaro, Culture & Arts Officer from the National Commission for Culture and the Arts talks to BHTV. Abigail also flew in from Manila this morning.

Thanks to all the media representatives who attended. Thanks for helping us get the word out.

Now in its third year, Produksyon Tramontina and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts will celebrate BACOLLYWOOD 3: VISAYAN FILM FESTIVAL on February 1-5, 2011 in Bacolod City, Philippines.

Due to popular demand, the festival will expand to showcase Visayan films, directors and stories with the intention of educating the audience of Visayan Culture through cinema. BACOLLYWOOD 3: VISAYAN FILM FESTIVAL will be a 5 day event screening throughout Robinson's Movie World Bacolod, Art District Stage and major college and university campuses in the area.

For Rose Ann, it was just an ordinary day. During her morning routine she spots an unopened sanitary napkin and realizes today may be the day most teenage girls are frightened of. She takes out her pregnancy test and we see what's in store for her.

THE OLD FOOL WHO MOVED MOUNTAINS (YUGONG YISHAN)

Director: Joanna Arong (Cebu)

Yugong Yishan refers to an ancient Chinese fable of an old man coined a fool for attempting to move the mountains that blocked the path in front of his house. He determinedly digs a small amount every day and with perseverance eventually manages to move these mountains. Yugong Yishan is also one of the three stories found in the Little Red Book, which Chairman Mao required everyone to memorize during the Cultural Revolution, to unite people in order to fight against the mountains he identified as imperialism and feudalism. Today, Yugong Yishan is the name of a small, non-descript bar, owned by a Chinese musician Gouzi, located in the heart of Beijing, which has already been marked for demolition to make way for more commercial ventures. Gouzi’s vision is to create a thriving independent music scene in Beijing. The documentary, Yugong Yishan, explores the spirit of The Old Fool through three generations.

This film explores how the pains of everyday life are intricately linked with faith and the church in Zambia. Time seems to stand still as events unfold for a girl, a young mother and an elder. Amid recurring themes of death and renewal, we rediscover religion as a force to heal wounds that the modern world has long left behind. Sunday school, where children are taught about God, also becomes a place where their parents learn to find comfort and relief from daily pressures.

The Bacollywood Film Festival has featured filmakers from the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental and highlighted the work of many other emerging and established filmmakers throughout the region providing a platform for rising talent and a venue for discourse on current trends in Independent Film Making.

Now in its third year, Produksyon Tramontina and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts will celebrate BACOLLYWOOD 3: VISAYAN FILM FESTIVAL on February 1-5, 2011 in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, Philippines.

Due to popular demand, the festival will expand to showcase Visayan films, directors and stories with the intention of educating the audience of Visayan Culture through cinema. BACOLLYWOOD 3: VISAYAN FILM FESTIVAL will be a 5 day event on February 1-5, 2011, screening throughout Robinson's Movie World Bacolod and major college and university campuses in the area.

BACOLLYWOOD 3: VISAYAN FILM FESTIVAL is made possible through a partnership of University of St. La Salle, La Consolacion College, University of Negros Occidental Recoletos, Colegio de San Agustine and Robinson's Movie World Bacolod.
